Common Core Standards: Challenges and Opportunities

The Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education (MBAE) and the Rennie Center for Education Research and Policy co-hosted this forum to provide valuable information on the Common Core State Standards Initiative to educators, policy makers and business leaders. OPENING - Jill Norton, Executive Director of the Rennie Center for Education Research & Policy, welcomes the audience to the event and introduces Gene Wilhoit, Executive Director of the Council of Chief State School Officers. Gene Wilhoit provides a short overview of the Common Core process, goals, and progress.
RESPONDENT PANEL - Robert Richardson, Chairman of the Board of the MBAE, moderates a panel featuring Robert Antonucci, President of Fitchburg State College; Jason Zimba, writer for the Common Core mathematics standards; and Jim Patterson, writer for the Common Core English language arts standards.
Q&A AND CLOSING REMARKS - Questions and comments from the audience guided this discussion about the budget, implementation, and analysis of the Common Core. The event closes with remarks from Linda Noonan, Executive Director of MBAE and the announcement that MBAE has commissioned an independent comparison of the Common Core and the Massachusetts Revised Curriculum Frameworks.
