A Newsletter from MBAE
It's a new year, and MBAE has a new look! Our new logo is just one of the ways MBAE is representing the business perspective on education issues. MBAE is actively involved in advocating for high school policy reforms to educate a workforce for the 21st century. Our focus on assuring that students are prepared for college and career includes other activities as well.

Over the past few months, we have been meeting with employers across Massachusetts to involve them in the State Scholars Initiative, a partnership the brings business volunteers in to high schools to motivate students to pursue a rigorous course of study. If you would like more information - or want to volunteer - please contact us!

  Using Data to Raise Achievement
You'll find another new look on our website when you visit Just for the Kids! MBAE is proud to be the state affiliate of the National Center for Educational Accountability and to provide educators, parents and concerned citizens access to school data presented in a useful format to inform, inspire and improve school performance.

In addition to a new look and easier navigation, the Just for the Kids website includes data about Massachusetts Charter Schools for the first time. Another new feature is the ability to look at rates of students continuously enrolled in that district who were previously passing MCAS in earlier grades. A page of Frequently Asked Questions and Chart Explanations provide explanations to help you understand and use the wealth of information presented.

Just for the Kids is designed to shine a light on best practices, and provide models of schools with like demographics who are achieving at high levels. Your feedback about the site is always welcome!

Campaign for Educator Excellence
Legislative Initiative Provides Standards, Support and Accountability
Research shows that teacher and administrator expertise are the most significant variables in student achievement. Yet, this aspect of education reform has not been addressed to the same extent as standards and accountability or equitable school funding.

Under the leadership of Teachers 21, a working group of organizations representing educators, unions, business and others concerned about quality education have come together to support legislation that has garnered the sponsorship of over 100 legislators to date. With the support of these varied constituencies, positive progress can be made to advance educator quality.

The goal of this bill is to to build a seamless, coherent system for developing and sustaining high quality educators. This will be accomplished through:

  • Better teacher evaluation
  • Expedited dismissal of unsuccessful teachers
  • Increased retention of new teachers
  • Improved college and university preparation programs
  • Increased opportunity for excellent teachers to assume instructional leadership responsibilities
The proposed legislation offers a comprehensive approach to supporting educators in their efforts to raise student achievement.
