Massachusetts Adopts Common Core
This morning, I presented a statement in support of adoption of the Common Core State Standards to the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. The Board later voted unanimously to adopt the Common Core State Standards. MBAE’s partners in the Massachusetts business community, including the Associated Industries of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, the Progressive Business Leaders Network, Boston Leaders for Education, and the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership joined us in supporting adoption with appropriate Massachusetts supplements. A key factor in gaining business support was the independent comparison of Massachusetts’ standards to the Common Core commissioned by MBAE and conducted by WestEd.
While the debate over the Common Core has been notably contentious in Massachusetts, the public comments and Board deliberations were focused on substantive issues and the shared commitment to do what is in the best interests of our children and our state.
